ELB-VME-VFB6 Module

The single slot ELB-VME-VFB6 module features a Xilinx Spartan 6 FPGA as its core component. The module can be adapted to a broad variety of applications using extension cards. The ELB-VME-VFB6 mdoule can be equipped with Xilinx Spartan 6 editions LX45, LX75, LX100 or LX150 according to customer requirements.

Firmwares for a multitude of applications can be be acquired directly from ELB as well as custom created firmwares are available upon request. Additionally due to our open interface philosophy we enable our customers to create their own firmwares.

Possible applications include but are not limited to:

  • Data acquisition of small and large experiments in nuclear and particle physics.
  • Fast processing tasks.
  • Data processing/conversion.

Power Supply

  • Using switching voltage regulators, -5V, 3.3V and 1.2V are provided on the board at very low heat dissipation.
  • Voltages and currents of all on-board voltages can be measured and read out using digital I/O.
  • The switching voltage regulators can be replaced by linear regulators allowing the ELB-VME-VFB6 module to be used near strong magnetic fields. This variant supports reduced maximum currents and larger heat dissipation.
  • LED status indicators of all available voltages allow fast error checking.

Extension Connectors

  • The ELB-VME-VFB6 module offers three slots for extension cards.
  • Each slot offers 80 direct connections to FPGA I/Os. (80 single-ended and 40 differential lines).
  • Available voltages for extension cards are: -5V, +5V, +3.3V, +12V.
  • Both dimensions and pinouts of the extensions are available as part of our open interface philosphy enabling customers to create their own compatible extensions.
  • In additions to slots for up to three extension cards, the ELB-VME-VFB6 module offers further freely programmable I/O connectors.

VMEbus Interface

  • VMEbus access via A32/D32, BLT.
  • Full VME interrupt support.
  • Fully encapsulated VME interface. The implementation in a separate CPLD allows for module access without a FPGA loaded.
  • Firmware loadable via VMEbus.
  • Status LEDs indicate the current bus state (VME access, communication).

Additional features

  • Internal extension port with 74 direct connections to the FPGA (This option is not available with Xilinx Spartan 6 LX45).
  • Pinheaders allowing access to all user defined pins of the VME P2 connector.
  • Onboard 100 MHz chrystal oscillator.
  • Free DIL-socket for an additional oscillator.
  • 8 MBytes flash RAM acessible via VME or JTAG.
  • JTAG interface for direct communictation with the FPGA and Flash RAM.
  • 2 general purpose NIM I/Os.
  • 2 NIM inputs for external clock sources.
  • 2 universal differential inputs accepting voltage ranges between -4V and +5V with 100 Ohm impedance.
  • 8 push buttons directly connected to the FPGA allow for testing of firmwares or manual control of firmware features.
  • Up to 8 freely programmable LEDs allow for visual feedback.
